Job Overview
This key role offers a dynamic opportunity for a skilled finance professional to oversee the full cycle accounting and financial statement preparation processes. Reporting to a part-time CFO, the Controller will manage critical financial operations, focusing on liquidity and cash flow planning for both the short and long term. The role also involves responsibility for operational expenditure budgeting and forecasting, ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic goals.
The Controller will lead and mentor a direct report who assists with routine financial tasks, streamlining the efficiency of the finance department. This position is essential for maintaining the company’s financial health and supporting its ongoing success in a competitive environment.
This role is a key member of the Senior Management team where you daily work alongside the C-Suite leadership team.
Responsibilities
- Generate quarterly financial and monthly cash flow reports with the CFO for the C-Suite and upper management.
- Prepare and own the budgeting and monthly forecasting process to support business development with the CFO.
- Create and monitor management dashboards for revenues, expenses, and other financial metrics to aid decision-making.
- Monitor cash flow and bank transfer needs with CFO oversight.
- Prepare annual audit materials in support of the CFO.
- Conduct financial analysis for future acquisitions, modeling for commissions, products, partners, pricing, and client proposals.
- Prepare, file, and manage the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) and Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) tax credit processes.
- Provide expense approvals, reconcile contracts, and conduct analysis for expense reductions.
- Manage and maintain bookkeeping, AR/AP transactions, payroll, controls, and accounting procedures, producing reports as needed.
- Ensure timely resolution and communication of AR/AP issues to internal and external parties.
- Collaborate with CFO on financial strategy and documentation needed for monthly financial statements and forecasts.
- Manage all compliance and government reporting, filings, and remittances, including payroll, HST, EHT, and quarterly bank compliance covenants.
- Reconcile monthly activity, working closely with the CFO.
- Maintain organized financial files accessible for the CFO, auditor, and others as needed.
- Stay updated on best practices and recommend improvements to financial systems.
- Maintain effective communication with the executive team for transparency on financial strategies and outcomes.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to a financial analyst direct report, fostering growth and enhancing departmental productivity.
- Serve as a finance business partner to operations, collaborating to optimize financial performance and support operational decision-making.
About the Candidate
- CPA designation.
- Experience in full-cycle accounting and producing financial statements.
- Experience with cash-flow management and liquidity management is a plus.
- Strong expertise in budgeting, financial modeling, and compliance management.
- Project management experience in the tech/SaaS industry is a bonus.
- Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Zoho, or similar.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with ERP systems.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
